So I tell...

I'm a writer, not a talker, so I tell myself. Nobody was more surprised than I was to find me delivering the homily last Sunday at Church of the Transfiguration in Saluda, North Carolina, my home town. There were two priests in attendance to keep me straight. I strove to tell only the truth as far as I knew it. The big temptation for preachers is to tell people more than they know. If you're curious about all that was said and sung that day, here's a link to the worship service . Henry's books . That's my town...

That's my town down there,

dissolving into shadow

as the day dies down,

Lights are already coming on

here and there, life goes on

and people laugh and weep

even after sundown, when

the strangers are all gone

and only those you love

are still around to witness

your private joys or tears.
