So I tell...

I'm a writer, not a talker, so I tell myself. Nobody was more surprised than I was to find me delivering the homily last Sunday at Church of the Transfiguration in Saluda, North Carolina, my home town. There were two priests in attendance to keep me straight. I strove to tell only the truth as far as I knew it. The big temptation for preachers is to tell people more than they know. If you're curious about all that was said and sung that day, here's a link to the worship service . Henry's books . Rather be...

We would rather be ruined than changed
We would rather die in our dread
Than climb the cross of the moment
And let our illusions die.

(W.H. Auden, “Epilogue.” The Age of Anxiety, 1948).
