Writing Wendl - attrition...

Status report on the current novel project, Wendl the Fallen : At around 60,000 words, I've killed off a couple of characters, which is usually an early sign that the story is finding me. The target is a rough draft of about 100,000 words in twelve chapters, which will trim down in re-write and editing to something like 70,000 words in ten chapters. I've never written a novel this dark before - or this funny. To be honest, I'm not at all sure I'll ever be able to finish it. Meanwhile, The Winged Child will be out in February. That is my best one so far.   Henry's books . If you would like to deliver Drovers Gap blog directly to your email inbox, click here .

It is hard...

It is hard to walk a straight path in a crooked land. One can possibly manage it by avoiding paved places, by doing no work for pay one wouldn't do for love, by remembering that desires and needs are not synonymous, that the internet is not the real world, that fame is not greatness, that success is not spelled with dollar signs.

Be even more cautious how you spend your time than how you spend your money; you can always make more money. Be careful what you cut down; love and trees take a long time to grow back. You're safer following your heart than following advice. Be forgiving, to yourself and others; resentment and anger get heavier the longer you carry them.

Nobody's perfect; anybody who thinks they are, is dangerous. Avoid them like the plague. In times of contagion, wear your mask and get your shots. It isn't all about you. It never was.
