Writing Wendl - attrition...

Status report on the current novel project, Wendl the Fallen : At around 60,000 words, I've killed off a couple of characters, which is usually an early sign that the story is finding me. The target is a rough draft of about 100,000 words in twelve chapters, which will trim down in re-write and editing to something like 70,000 words in ten chapters. I've never written a novel this dark before - or this funny. To be honest, I'm not at all sure I'll ever be able to finish it. Meanwhile, The Winged Child will be out in February. That is my best one so far.   Henry's books . If you would like to deliver Drovers Gap blog directly to your email inbox, click here .

Close company...

Lately, I've had a flurry of medical appointments come up, including some minor surgery, so with Delta in town, I've been avoiding the crowds, wearing my mask when I must associate with other humans, and generally doing my best to walk upwind of the herd whenever possible.

Meanwhile I'm getting up close and personal with my garden and the assorted creatures who claim it as their territory. So far, we're getting along just fine.

  1. I have been going through similar challenges and was recently in the hospital for what appears to have been stress-related difficulties (pushing myself too hard to finish a novel that has been in progress for what I felt was far too long), though medications I take could also be the culprits. My garden seems to be the best medicine for me these days. It sounds like you're doing the very best thing possible for your mind, body, and spirit. Take care.

    1. Sharon, I pray you're feeling better already. Don't push that novel so hard it ceases to be fun. They take as long as they take. My current project may take longer than me. Writing is more exciting than being finished, in any case.
