Writing Wendl - attrition...

Status report on the current novel project, Wendl the Fallen : At around 60,000 words, I've killed off a couple of characters, which is usually an early sign that the story is finding me. The target is a rough draft of about 100,000 words in twelve chapters, which will trim down in re-write and editing to something like 70,000 words in ten chapters. I've never written a novel this dark before - or this funny. To be honest, I'm not at all sure I'll ever be able to finish it. Meanwhile, The Winged Child will be out in February. That is my best one so far.   Henry's books . If you would like Follow.it to deliver Drovers Gap blog directly to your email inbox, click here .

By the good...

When the road is long

and you're close to night

and home's yet far

and out of sight,

and you're not sure

were your turnings right,

just keep on walking

toward the Light.

You're not the first,

to come this way,

this path was marked

some other day

by throngs of pilgrims

who wouldn't stay

at home and miss

such holy play.

Though now you may

not know each name,

the way you pass

remains the same

that they all knew

as they each came

to join with you

in God's great game.

Though many rage

and boast their might

to claim their due

by force and fight,

seize their treasure

and hold it tight,

they'll never know

the soul's delight

who flees the crowd

and walks alone

the quiet wood

where flesh and bone

has stayed and stood,

patiently as any stone

until taken by the Good

forever near and never gone.
