Writing Wendl - attrition...

Status report on the current novel project, Wendl the Fallen : At around 60,000 words, I've killed off a couple of characters, which is usually an early sign that the story is finding me. The target is a rough draft of about 100,000 words in twelve chapters, which will trim down in re-write and editing to something like 70,000 words in ten chapters. I've never written a novel this dark before - or this funny. To be honest, I'm not at all sure I'll ever be able to finish it. Meanwhile, The Winged Child will be out in February. That is my best one so far.   Henry's books . If you would like Follow.it to deliver Drovers Gap blog directly to your email inbox, click here .

When she does...

Rose Valliant rescued me from a painful case of writer's block that set in around my eightieth birthday. I wrote stuff, but hardly any fiction. Ideas for stories would come, and I'd start to write, and the image would drift away, leaving me with, at best, a fragment of something unbecome and gone before it ever was quite here.

I don't know what happened to cause this lapse. Most of the previous males is our clan have died in their eighties. Maybe I was just afraid I'd start something and wouldn't last long enough to finish. At any rate, as I said, Rose brought me back to myself.

Rose Valliant and I first met in a short story I started in 2019, intending to include it in a collection, Early Dark, that came out late last year. A few pages in, I knew how Rose's tale was going to end and lost interest, wrote a novel instead. Rose still wants to tell me how she got there. When she does, I'll tell you.
