Writing Wendl - attrition...

Status report on the current novel project, Wendl the Fallen : At around 60,000 words, I've killed off a couple of characters, which is usually an early sign that the story is finding me. The target is a rough draft of about 100,000 words in twelve chapters, which will trim down in re-write and editing to something like 70,000 words in ten chapters. I've never written a novel this dark before - or this funny. To be honest, I'm not at all sure I'll ever be able to finish it. Meanwhile, The Winged Child will be out in February. That is my best one so far.   Henry's books . If you would like to deliver Drovers Gap blog directly to your email inbox, click here .

Going postal...

I walked down to the post office to mail a book, put on my mask, went inside and took my place in the socially distanced line. The expensively dressed masked woman in front of me was berating the lady behind the counter, "I won't pay a late fee," she chittered," I'll rent a new box, but I won't pay a late fee."

The Post Office lady explained, courteously and patiently, that the customer would first have to close out the old mailbox and it would take several days for the transfer to take effect. This didn't appease the woman with the overdue box rent, who launched into a scathing review of the United States Postal Service. It didn't matter to her that the Post Office had sent timely notice, or that you can even pay your box rent on-line. Convenient as it may be, she was late paying her postal box rent. She would have to pay a late fee to renew.

Meanwhile, I mailed my book, first class, because I was late sending it out to the reader. As I was on my way out the door, Masked Woman fired another round, "I'm a senior citizen. Don't I get a break?"

Privilege doesn't brook accountability.
