Into the woods...

Into the welcoming woods we go, Careful and quiet, watchful and slow, With only the birds to sing us along, And only the trees to say we belong, Trusting the path to lead us aright, Praising the sun for giving us light, And when we tally the silence we sought, We’ll have as much as the silence we brought.   Henry's books .   If you would like Drovers Gap blog delivered directly to your email inbox, click here . Colorful...

Among the latest residents on my Kobo app is this quirky collection of ten short stories from Creative James Media. Some of the tales I liked better than others although I couldn't tell you offhand which ones I might have liked less. The title, Kaleidoscope, refers to the theme of the collection, colors. This weighs like an imposed burden on some of the pieces, but all the authors carry it off bravely.

Two stories, in particular, stick in my mind, which isn't to say the others are not as good, only that these two have that peculiar touch of dark that appeals to my twisted sensibilities. Jinny Alexander delivers an off-beat take on a fairy tale with a wicked twist at the end - more Rose Red than Little Red Riding Hood. Lo Potter dishes up a Southern gothic stew with a dash of dread thrown in that leaves a reader wishing at the end for a larger bowl.

If there are any writers here you haven't heard of before, you will. They each have bigger and better stuff on the way. Catch this book and you can say you read 'em when.

Kaleidoscope.
