Along the road...

Somewhere along the road,
When I was too occupied
watching my step to notice.
I got old. It isn't the years
that get your attention,
it's the uphill mileage.
Suddenly, you realize
it's become a lot easier
to keep going than it is
to get going. Still and all,
there's scarely more pain
in being old than young.
Youth tears and rages,
the aged walk on slow,
measuring their pace
to fit an easy breath.
A mile does take longer
but there's time enough
to savor the lingering light.
