I celebrated the last weekend of summer by taking a little walk through the Saluda Mountains on the Palmetto Trail. All the way to Saluda Gap and back and I didn't meet another human. At the trail head, a clutch of young cyclists passed on the road as I was gathering my gear.
That is the defining difference in our cultures, perhaps. Those on wheels travel in packs and tend to pavements, find safety in numbers. Those afoot are more likely to travel alone, tend to ridgelines and look to trees, find safety in not being noticed.
Having said that, the cyclists were nice folk. We agreed that the day was lovely.
