...because it's there.


Why would anyone stop and make a photograph of this? Because it's there, I suppose. It really serves no purpose except to draw the eye into the shaded grove beyond, and slow one's passing long enough to admire the flowers growing around it. It is a pleasant shape and perhaps to make one stop and see beauty in the midst of sterile urbanosity is reason enough to justify a place in the world.

There was no clue as to the sculptor's identity, but having spent fifty years of a former life making objects that purely practical people would consider worthless, my sympathy is with the maker, whoever she or he may be. The anonymous sculptor gave me a moment of calm and reflection in an otherwise hectic and frustrating day.
