We Christians build churches because living every day face to face with God is a deal too heavy for us to carry off unassisted. Of course, we realized early on that we couldn't build a box big enough to hold God, so we started building little boxes for us to hide in. Then we colored the windows so we couldn't see Her peeping through at us.
We went inside and closed the door. Not to be outdone, God bagan whispering love songs to us through the keyhole. We sat down then and tried to sing a hymn loud enough to drown out God's ceaseless and insistent whisper.
That's when we discovered we can't build a box small enough to keep God out.
