To fee or not to fee...


Whenever I come across a open to submissions notice from a magazine that whines, unfortunately, we are unable to offer payment to contributors at this time, I think, "I am unable to submit at this time."

Writers must pay their bills just like everybody else. Lawyers and airline pilots, carpenters, electricians, teachers, even most preachers would never imagine doing their work full-time without some monetary compensation. If a magazine charges people to read their publication, they ought to pay the people who write it.

Having said all that, I do some writing for free. It's in this blog. You're reading it.
